PageRank is an algorithm used by Google Search to rank websites in their search engine results. PageRank was named after Larry Page, one of the founders of Google. PageRank is a way of measuring the importance of website pages.
Google's last Toolbar PageRank update, which rolled out on December 2013, may have been its last as Google's John Mueller stated in a recent Google Hangout:
"There are a few things where we do take action that you might not see directly. Toolbar PageRank is something that we have not updated for about a year now, and we're probably not going to be updating it going forward...we have a lot of way to recognize these problematic links, and the sites selling those links, that essentially blocks the PageRank from passing through those sites."
So, PageRank will (most likely) not be updated going forward. So, is PageRank dead? Yes and no. PageRank is still used by Google behind the scenes to rank search results. However, Toolbar Page will not be updated. Toolbar PageRank is the PageRank webmasters and others can publicly see: for example, there is no shortage of websites that will display the Toolbar PageRank for a given domain. However, since Toolbar PageRank is mo longer updated, it is unreliable and often inaccurate since it is not updated. If your site has a PageRank of 0, that will not change.
So, ignore PageRank. The PageRank we know is a thing of the past, and valueless until if and when Google updates Toolbar PageRank.
